Ecuador is a small but incredibly diverse country, with a large number of tourist attractions ranging from beaches and volcanoes to colonial cities and tropical rainforests. Below, we will detail each of the country's provinces and some of its main tourist attractions.





Azuay: located in the southern region of the country, Azuay is known for its beautiful capital, Cuenca, a colonial city full of churches, squares, and historic buildings. In addition to its charming historic center, Cuenca is famous for its handicrafts, especially for its toquilla straw hats and ceramics. It is also worth visiting the Inca ruins of Ingapirca, located about two hours from the city.


Bolívar: this province is located in the Andean region of the country and is known for its mountainous landscapes and rich indigenous culture. One of its main tourist attractions is the Guamote market, one of the largest and most authentic indigenous markets in the country. Also located in this province is the Colta lagoon, a beautiful body of water surrounded by mountains and famous for its San Francisco church, built in the 16th century.


Cañar: another province located in the southern region of the country, Cañar is known for its impressive Andean landscapes and Inca ruins. The main tourist attraction of this province is the citadel of Todos los Santos, an impressive Inca structure located in the mountains and built over 500 years ago. The ruins of Ingapirca, located in the neighboring province of Azuay, can also be visited.


Carchi: this small province located in the northern region of the country is famous for its natural beauty and cheese production. One of its main tourist attractions is the El Ángel National Park, a beautiful paramo landscape full of lagoons, waterfalls, and frailejones. It is also worth visiting the city of Tulcán, known for its impressive cemetery full of cypress sculptures.


Chimborazo: this Andean province is known for its imposing volcano, Chimborazo, the highest mountain in Ecuador. In addition to enjoying impressive views of the volcano, visitors can enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking and mountain biking. Also located in this province is the Balbanera tourist complex, which features a beautiful colonial church and a religious art museum.


Cotopaxi: located in the Andean region of the country, this province is famous for its impressive volcano, Cotopaxi, which is also one of the highest active volcanoes in the world. Visitors can go hiking and climbing on the volcano, as well as enjoy beautiful views of the Andean landscape. The Cotopaxi National Park can also be visited, which has a large amount of wildlife and beautiful Andean landscapes, including lagoons and forests. In addition, in the city of Latacunga, you can visit the famous Mama Negra festivities, a celebration that combines indigenous and Spanish elements and is celebrated in November.


El Oro: located in the country's coastal region, El Oro is known for its beautiful beaches and banana production. The city of Machala is the capital of the province and is famous for its banana fair, held in September. In addition, visitors can enjoy beaches such as Ayangue and Puerto Bolívar, as well as the Churute mangroves.


Esmeraldas: This coastal province is known for its beautiful beaches, rich Afro-Ecuadorian culture, and production of emeralds. Some of the province's main tourist attractions include the beaches of Atacames, Tonsupa, and Same, as well as the Mache Chindul Ecological Reserve. Visitors can also explore the city of Esmeraldas, where Esmeralda's Carnival is celebrated, a festival that combines African and American elements.


Galapagos: These unique islands in the world are Ecuador's main tourist attractions and are located about 1000 kilometers off the country's coast. The Galapagos Islands are famous for their unique fauna, which inspired Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. Visitors can enjoy activities such as diving, snorkeling, whale and dolphin watching, bird watching, and observing giant tortoises. Guayas: Located in the coastal region of the country, Guayas is Ecuador's most populous province and is known for its capital, Guayaquil, the country's largest city. Guayaquil is famous for its Malecon 2000, a beautiful walk along the Guayas River, as well as its colonial Las Peñas neighborhood and the Iguanas Park. In addition, visitors can enjoy beautiful beaches such as Salinas, Ballenita, and Playas, as well as the Manglares Churute Ecological Reserve.

Imbabura: Located in the Andean region of the country, Imbabura is known for its beautiful mountain landscapes and rich indigenous culture. One of its main tourist attractions is the city of Otavalo, famous for its indigenous market, where crafts, textiles, and local agricultural products can be found. Visitors can also explore Lake San Pablo, Cuicocha Lagoon, and the Cotacachi-Cayapas Ecological Reserve.

Loja: Located in the southern region of the country, Loja is known for its rich culture and beautiful colonial architecture. Some of its main tourist attractions include the city of Loja, with its cathedral and central park, as well as the city of Vilcabamba, known for its warm climate and healthy lifestyle. In addition, visitors can explore the Podocarpus National Park, Yaguarcocha Lagoon, and the Ingapirca archaeological complex.

Los Ríos: Located in the coastal region of the country, Los Ríos is known for its rice production and beautiful beaches. The city of Babahoyo is the capital of the province and is famous for its San Juan festival, which is celebrated in June and includes activities such as bullfighting and parades. In addition, visitors can enjoy the beaches of Manta, San Jacinto, and San Clemente, as well as the Sanctuary of the Virgen de la Nube, on El Empalado Hill.

Manabí: Located in the coastal region of the country, Manabí is known for its beautiful beaches, rich culture, and production of tagua and toquilla straw hats. Some of its main tourist attractions include the city of Manta, famous for its fishing port and beaches; the Machalilla National Park, which includes beautiful beaches such as Los Frailes and Agua Blanca; and the city of Montecristi, famous for its production of toquilla straw hats.

Morona Santiago: Located in the Amazon region of the country, Morona Santiago is known for its beautiful natural landscapes and rich indigenous culture. Some of its main tourist attractions include Sangay National Park, which includes volcanoes, lagoons, and tropical forests; the Shuar indigenous community, which offers community tourism experiences; and the city of Macas, which is the capital of the province and has a rich history and culture.

Napo: Also located in the Amazon region of the country, Napo is known for its beautiful natural landscapes and rich indigenous culture. Some of its main tourist attractions include Yasuni National Park, which has great biodiversity and is home to indigenous communities, and the Napo River, which offers activities such as rafting and wildlife observation. Orellana: Located in the Amazon region of the country, Orellana is known for its oil production and rich indigenous culture. Some of its main tourist attractions include the Pichincha volcano and the Antisana ecological reserve.

Santa Elena: Located in the coastal region of the country, Santa Elena is known for its beautiful beaches and salt production. Some of its main tourist attractions include the city of Salinas, famous for its beaches and water sports; the Manglares Churute ecological reserve, which includes mangroves and bird watching; and the town of Ballenita, which has a beautiful lighthouse and an impressive view of the Pacific Ocean.

Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas: Located in the coastal region of the country, Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas is known for its cocoa production and Tsáchila culture. Some of its main tourist attractions include the Los Bancos ecological park, which has a great variety of animal and plant species; the Tsáchila reserve, which offers community tourism experiences; and the city of Santo Domingo, which is the capital of the province and has a rich history and culture.


Sucumbíos: Located in the Amazon region of the country, Sucumbíos is known for its oil production and rich indigenous culture. Some of its main tourist attractions include Cuyabeno National Park, which has great biodiversity and is home to indigenous communities; the Siona indigenous community, which offers community tourism experiences; and the city of Nueva Loja, which is the capital of the province and has a rich history and culture.
